Ahrens on the Road//Skiing in Mammoth

This year we decided to forgo birthday presents and use the money toward trips and for Matt’s birthday we decided on skiing at Mammoth. He’s been a big skier since he was young and hadn’t been in a few years. I on the other hand, have skied once, on a hill in Iowa. In fact, skiing might be a generous term, it felt like a lot of falling continuously down a hill.

It was a quick 3 day trip with the thought that if this turned out to be a terrible decision and everyone hates this, we can leave quickly. Turns out, not the case! The kids were smitten with the snow and skiing. We stayed at The Village Lodge in a two bedroom condo (with a kitchen).

It was lovely in terms of location and amenities but we were underwhelmed with their customer service (there was confusion on our lift tickets and it took us two hours and a customer service call to settle). I would probably stay there again just because it was hard to beat the convenience of having on-site child care (5 stars for the center), direct gondola access to the mountain and the shops/restaurants within walking distance. Anyway! Just thought I’d share since I’m always curious how/where people stay with kiddos.

We signed them up for ski school (which…goodbye to all the money) for three hours and they did so great! In the end it was worth it to have a kid friendly instructor who could teach them actual technique and form. They were able to use a special lift and learn on the “magic carpet”. It was adorable.

Look at that hilarious little lift they ride up on! I was so impressed they stayed out as long as they did. The wind was so awful!A short weekend trip to the Villages at Mammoth resort. Toddlers at ski school on the magic carpet.

I tried snapping while we were out there but it was brutally windy and I was getting terrible reception so I don’t have many pictures of the whole ordeal. We did snap this quick pic while freezing waiting our turn for the lift.

The line was SO long (a few of the other lifts were closed due to weather and lack of snow) that I didn’t even get to go all the way up before I needed to pick up the big kids and grab Lucy from daycare. It was probably for the best since I am a super inexperienced skier. I did a few runs (using that term really loosely here!) down the bunny hill and the next time we head back, I’ll also be signing up for lessons.

Matt went back and skied for a few hours while the rest of us Netflixed and chilled in the condo. We bundled up and went back out for an afternoon walk to play in the snow and grab a few essentials at the shops. Sunday morning we packed our bags and headed back to the sunshine! It would have been great to stay another day but in the end I’m glad we decided on a short trip first. Better to leave wanting more I say!
