DIY Playsilks

Feeling unusually ambitious a couple of weeks ago I took on a little DIY in the name of being Fun Mom. At the kids’ school they have these little play silks, just small hand scarves that are dyed in bright colors. The kids use them for dress up, twirling around, and making forts. Adorable.

I went online to grab a few and they were EIGHTEEN dollars each. No, ma’am. Look, I love a well made, creative, open-ended toy as much as the next hippie mother but that seemed ridiculous. Particularly since I wanted a rainbow set. So enter every mother’s best frenemy, Pinterest.

Kaley Ann had easy to follow directions on dyeing the silks, she also listed out all of the color combinations she (and I) made. I altered her initial recipe as I found that 2 cups of water to 1 cup of vinegar worked best for me. I loved using food safe coloring and vinegar on these since my kids are playing with them (read: putting them in their mouths like disgusting preschoolers). My one caveat with the food coloring, try to find the liquid drops instead of the more popular gel colors. I found it was difficult to measure out how much I needed for a color with the gel. You’ll also want to make sure to iron the silks after they’re dry to set the dye, otherwise the colors will bleed.
