Handmade Holiday: DIY Car Ramp

You may have seen our last minute Santa gift to Hudson on Snapchat or IG stories. It’s a car ramp! It cost me less than $20 and took me about 15 minutes to make. I would say it was the hit of Christmas. It even outshone my pet project.

I saw this awesomeness on Kate’s blog awhile ago and knew our kiddos would love it! I believe her dad made their ramp so she didn’t have any measurements or specific wood information so I headed to Home Depot on a search.

I used a six foot length of a 6×1 board (5.5 inches across by 1 inch tall). My trim was corner molding (meaning it had two sides) which I really was looking for so I didn’t have to do any sanding on the side of the common board (they’re typically pretty rough). I think the trim does a nice job making the project look finished but it also keeps the cars on the ramp as they’re speeding down the hill. You can see on the photo above how the trim piece wraps around the board on two sides.

I based my lumber choice based on my trim overlap (about a 1/2 inch on each side) and that I knew my road tape was 4 inches across.

Once I got home with my supplies I got right to work as Christmas was a comin’! First I centered the tape down the board as best I could without losing my mind. 😉 I then cut my length of trim in half (to use on each side of the ramp). I used Gorilla Wood Glue to hold down the trim and let it dry a couple of days. I didn’t use any nails to secure it and it’s held up very well to all of our car and train ramping and crashing.

That’s it! All of our kids love this thing. Car racing and train crashes are coming in as favorites. They also love setting up the Brio tracks and connecting them with the ramp.

Hi! I was curious how u managed it for under $20? With the links I’m over $50. I wonder if prices just increased that much since you’ve bought? Thanks!!

Hi Angela, I’m afraid it probably is price increases. I made the ramp well over 5 years ago.
